Disentangling regional economic and environmental impacts of transportation costs in Morocco: an inter-province CGE approach

This paper examines how reductions in transportation costs reshape regional economic and environmental outcomes in Morocco. We simulate a reduction in delivered (purchasers’) costs via a transport-margin efficiency improvement – implemented as a margin-saving technical change in the transport sector – within a province-level Spatial Computable General Equilibrium (SCGE) framework. Simulating a 1% decline in transport costs, we assess the marginal impacts across regions. Results reveal uneven gains: coastal areas along the Casablanca-Tangier axis and emerging hubs like Béni Mellal-Khénifra and Dakhla-Oued Ed Dahab benefit from growth and lower emissions, while traditional centers such as Fès-Meknès and Marrakech-Safi experience stagnation and rising carbon intensity. The findings highlight a partial decoupling of economic and environmental convergence, driven by both production structure and scale effects. Our analysis stresses the importance of territorially differentiated infrastructure policies that balance spatial equity with sustainability, offering insights for place-based development and green transformation strategies.

“Uberization,” a term derived from the American company Uber in the early 2010s, initially refers to an economic model based on directly matching supply and demand through digital platforms. Rapidly popularized, the concept has expanded with Airbnb in accommodation, and then to a wide range of other sectors: food delivery, home services, e-commerce, and even traditionally regulated or corporatist professions. This neologism thus reflects a transformation of economic and social relat ...

Using an interregional input-output model, extended with environmental satellite accounts, the study simulates a structural shock related to the wholesale substitution of ICEV-specific inputs wit ...

This paper was originaly published on sciencedirect.com   This paper introduces a novel empirical approach, combining sigma convergence and sigma counterfactual statistics, to examine the dynamics of structural transformation in Morocco from 1990 to 2018. The findings reveal that Morocco experienced structural transformation driven by labor productivity reallocation across sectors during specific sub-periods (1991–1993, 1996–1997, and 1998–2003). However, this process ca ...
