Transatlantic Relations and dynamics between North and South in a Changing World

January 19, 2024

2024 will be the most important electoral year on record. While elections will be held in major countries of the South (including India, Indonesia, and South Africa, among others) and in Russia, the North Atlantic will also be home to noticeable contests. The U.S. and the EU have witnessed a surge in right-wing populism. How both powerhouses will fare in front of that challenge to liberal democracy as it was traditionally understood, and how it will shape their foreign policy and engagement with the rest of the world, are the topics of this conversation with Strahinja Matejic, Associate Director in the Office of the President at the Eurasia Group, and member of the ADEL 2022 cohort.

Can a G7, dominated by developing nations, provide the impulse to global governance as did the old G7? The answer is no. What a difference ten years can make. It was nearly ten years ago when, in a paper written with Benn Stancil and titled “The World Order in 2050,” he and I predicted that by 2030 — in 11 years from now — five of the seven largest economies of the world would be drawn from the ranks of developing countries as defined by the World Bank at the time of our writi ...

Donald Trump finally has met a strongman he does not like. After making friends with authoritarian figures around the world, in Beijing, Budapest and Moscow, Ankara, Riyadh, Cairo and Manila or Jerusalem .He even fell in love with Kim Jong un, the dictator in North Korea, who’ s self righteousness borders the pathological narcissism of Donald Trump, who doesn’t mind that his love had his uncle executed and his brother poisoned. Pendant que les deux chefs d’Etat posaient devant les photographes, des avions de chasse israéliens bombardaient Gaza, en représailles des tirs de roquette palestiniens sur Tel Aviv ...

The opening of the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea symbolized an important phase in the newfound relations between the two. Since their rapprochement in June 2018, events have occurred at a frenzied pace, yet much was still in the political arena and removed from demonstrating tangible benefits to average citizens. By opening the border, the leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea changed that. Yet the border opening also reveals an insight into a previously isolated and largely closed ...

Morocco’s return to its “institutional family" by joining the African Union (AU) two years ago heralds renewed hope for positive progress in terms of the Organization's stance on the Sahara issue. This comeback, however, also raises fears and apprehensions over possible complications due to an intrusion by the continental organization into an exclusively UN process, geared since 2000 towards seeking a realistic and mutually acceptable political resolution. ...
