Voices from the South: A Discussion on the Dynamics and Future of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

March 27, 2024

As it enters its third year, the conflict in Ukraine appears to have reached an impasse. Developments in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific regions, as well as the apparent stalemate on the military front and the parties' unwillingness to discuss a cessation of hostilities under the current conditions, have raised questions about the prospects of a conflict with continuing global implications.

In this context, an apparent rift has begun to emerge between countries of the Global North and the Global South over the prioritization of the crisis on the international agenda and the lack of willingness to work together to address the secondary effects of the conflict on a range of issues including food security and energy.

The idea of this webinar is to discuss these dynamics, as well as key developments in the conflict and their impact and perception in different regions of the world (Middle East, Africa, LAC, etc).

Hybrid strategies and media old and new are utilized for information, persuasion and propaganda, with one underlying predicament, fake news, constantly lurking. The heavy financial sanctions on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine sparked speculations that the weaponization of access to reserves in dollars, euros, pounds, and yen would spark a division in the international monetary order. China would tend to strengthen its own international payments system and accelerate the establishment of its currency – the Renminbi – as a rival reserve currency to reduce its vulnerability to moves of a similar nature against it. Countries facing geopoli ...
