The course will examine the major trends in international security. Key themes are likely to include the following : global conflict trends; conflict and development; new security concerns, for example migration, climate change, water; globalization, economic development and global income distribution; upheaval in the Arab world; international intervention after 9/11; security implications of the rise of China; European geopolitics – NATO, the EU and Russia; the global security role of the US; the role of the UN and international law ; nuclear weapons, nuclear disarmament and international politics; new technologies of warfare; covert action and multi-dimensional conflict.

Objectives :

A more sophisticated understanding of the major trends in international security.

Deputy Director-General of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI)
Professor Malcolm Chalmers became Deputy Director-General of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) on 30 November 2015. He is RUSI’s acting Research Director, and the Director of its Proliferation and Nuclear Policy programme. His research focuses on UK defence, foreign and security policy. Before joining RUSI, Chalmers was a Senior Special Adviser in the FCO to Foreign Secretaries Jack Straw MP and Margaret Beckett MP. His previous appointments included: Professor of International Politics, University of Bradford; Senior Consulting Fellow, International Institute for Strategic Studies; Visiting Fellow, Center for International Security and Arms Control, Stanford University; Economist, Ministry of Finance, Government of Botswana. ...
Timothey Willasey-Wilsey
Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King's College London
Tim Wilsey has been Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King's College London since 2012.  After a year teaching in Ethiopia and a spell with an international packaging company Tim served for 27 years with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, latterly as a Director. He served in 4 overseas posts; Angola (1983-86), Central America (1986-89), Pakistan (1993-96) and at the UK Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (1999-2002). His early career was devoted principally to Southern Africa and Central America and included work on Cuban troop withdrawal from Angola, majority rule in Namibia and South Africa, the resolution of the civil wars in Angola and Mozambique, and the peace processes in Central America and the Middle East.
