Climate Refugees: A Major Challenge of International Community and Africa
June 20, 2022

From socio-economic crises to the scourges of war, through natural disasters and environmental degradation, the world's history is marked by events leading to mass migration, exacerbating the phenomenon of climate refugees. Today, environmental phenomena prompt many inhabitants to choose exile in search of more stable horizons. It is essential to note that no legal text, either global or regional, considers the case of climate refugees. Given the lack of a specific legal regime for climate refugees, global and regional organizations have no de-facto mandate to assist these individuals, increasing their vulnerability and further complicating the evolution of international law. Experts stress the need to define a legal status for climate refugees to create a protection mechanism for people displaced by climate-related disasters. In this regard, the African continent provides a promising perspective.

In a more chaotic and critical Mediterranean security environment that is facing a huge geopolitical change, the NATO alliance has found itself challenged by rival states across the spectrum of conflict. Russia, which represents an instance of this change, has acquired for the first time in its modern history a proper permanent base in the Mediterranean. Also, other geopolitical changes such as proliferation of ballistic missiles among both state and non-state actors around the Medi ...

Think tanks are blooming in Africa, as they have been in the USA, Europe and China… Some are already mature, like the Codesria, launched in 1973 in Dakar (Senegal) or the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), first established in 1991 in Pretoria, with regional offices opened in Cape Town, Addis Abeba and Nairobi.  Some are still young and spreading their wings, like AfriHeritage in Nigeria, founded in 2000 or the Groupe de recherche et d’analyse appliquées pour le développement (G ...

For decades, the North African Maghreb has been both a source of irregular migration to Europe and a gateway for sub-Saharan Africans transiting to Europe. Now the Maghreb is also emerging as a destination for migration. Africa’s massive migration is just getting started—and this presents ...
