Le sous-sol Africain regorge d’or et de diamants, d'hydrocarbures (pétrole, gaz naturel), mais aussi de divers métaux (fer, cuivre, aluminium, platine, chrome…). Cet atout, qu'est la possession de ressources naturelles abondantes, n'est pourtant pas un gage de prospérité pour le continent. Mal exploité, ce potentiel peut receler des pièges économiques et politiques difficiles à éviter. La situation africaine fournit un bon exemple des retombées contrastées de la malédiction des ressources.
