In the field of health, important results have been achieved on the African continent as shown by recent data in terms of life expectancy and the availability of treatment for the major causes of morbidity. In spite of this, the recent episode of the Ebola epidemic, which required the mobilization of substantial human and financial resources, but above all international aid, shows that health systems remain vulnerable to major shocks. The current context of the Covid-19 pandemic points to the fact that many countries, particularly those on the African continent, do not seem to be prepared to absorb shocks of such magnitude. It is therefore necessary to see to what extent SDGs can be improved to take into account the pressing need to build the resilience of health systems. In this respect, Germany stands out in Europe and worldwide for its performance in managing the current Covid-19 pandemic. Within this framework, and based on data relating to the German health system, a number of proposals have been put forward for an SDG-3 that more explicitly targets the resilience of health systems across the countries of the African continent. Among other things, the aim is to increase per capita health expenditure to at least 10% of GDP per capita in the medium term, and to strengthen the ratio of hospital beds and health technicians per inhabitant by 2030. The African continent could also capitalize on the high penetration of mobile phones to resort to digital technology in order to close the gap in access to specialist medical consultations.

Scholars of social movements and global protest have long neglected social movements in Africa, ostensibly because African societies are too rural, too tradition- or ethnicity-bound, or lacking advanced class formations. Those who have broached the topic tend to focus on South Africa’s labor movement and anti-apartheid struggle. Even less addressed is how social movements in various parts of the continent have affected each other. A continent-wide approach however shows that protest ...

He has reserved his page in history. Half a century ago Ernest “Che” Guevara was an icon of a global youth rebellion, a revolutionary pop star for the dreaming romantic generation of  1968- kids of the bourgeois conformist society who never had the courage to risk their lives or time for the oppressed. Instead, the angry restless sympathizers of Cuban and Vietnamese fighters threw stones and molotov cocktails, some smoked pot and shouted their support to Ho Chi Minh, the frail leade ...

For decades, the North African Maghreb has been both a source of irregular migration to Europe and a gateway for sub-Saharan Africans transiting to Europe. Now the Maghreb is also emerging as a destination for migration. While Europe remains the preferred destination for most African migrants, reaching Europe is becoming increasingly difficult at precisely the time that migration pressures in Africa are mounting. Africa’s massive migration is just getting started—and this presents ...

Cyril Ramaphosa outpassed Dlamini Zuma in the elections for replacing Jacob Zuma at the head of the ANC. Yet, his victory does not allow him to enjoy a huge success given the short gap he has recorded against the Dlamini Zuma but also given the balance of power within the decision-making bodies. However, we must bear in mind that the current President, notoriously involved in corruption cases, is still being detracted even by his own supporters. Hence, such elements raise the questi ...

Thinking creatively the bilateral relationship of Brazil and Morocco is quintessential for enhancing its reach and possibilities. The world is currently facing enormous changes whose outcomes are unpredictable. From a revival in the cold war realist dispute of power between the United States and Russia, the collapse of International Law in relation to Ukraine, Crimea and the South China Sea, BREXIT and the imponderable results that may impact the European Union and to the possible d ...
