June 10, 2025

In collaboration with the Policy Center for the New South, the Atlantic Council’s Africa Center, will launch the first policy brief of its new programming focused on the strategic and economic opportunities of the Atlantic basin. Authored by William Yancey Brown, the inaugural issue brief explores the immense energy and mineral potential of the Atlantic Ocean and emphasizes how African nations bordering the basin can manage these resources equitably and sustainably. This launch takes place against the backdrop of World Ocean Day, the upcoming 2025 UN Ocean Conference, and the ongoing work of the Group of Twenty, under South Africa’s presidency, through the Oceans 20 engagement group.
