Panel 2: Connectivity, Value Chains and the Green Transition in the Mediterranean

Faced with the compounding challenges of post-Covid recovery and supply chain disruptions, the green energy transition and the global implications of the Ukraine conflict, trade and connectivity across the Mediterranean is assuming even greater importance in policy circles. From renewable energy and food security, new industrial and agricultural practices, manufacturing value chains and electricity connectors, the Euro-Mediterranean space is ripe with opportunities for enhanced integration.

Andrea Dessì is Head of IAI's Italian Foreign Policy Programme, Senior Fellow within IAI’s Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa programme and Editorial Director of IAI’s English-language series IAI Commentaries. Andrea is also Scientific Director of the New Med Research Network and a Non-Resident Scholar at the Strategic Studies Implementation and Research Centre, Başkent University, Ankara. Afaf Zarkik is an economist at the Policy Center for the New South and a graduate in energy strategies from Ecole des Mines de Paris. Among her areas of research and reflection: energy commodities monitoring and energy transition and sustainable development policies analysis. Before joining the Policy Center, A. Zarkik was an analyst in oil and gas mergers and acquisitions, a venture capital analyst in a cleantech fund, and a senior analyst in asset management. Emiliano Alessandri is an analyst of Mediterranean ane MENA issues, with a focus on geopolitics, geoeconomics and security issues. He is a non resident scholar with the Middle East Institute of Washington and a Senior Fellow with the German Marshall Fund, where between 2010-2013 he developed the Mediterranean and Wider Atlantic programs. Yassine ZEGZOUTI obtained a PhD in Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences from Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech. He is an expert in climate change, a trainer on solid and liquid waste management, and the founder of the Mawarid Association for Environment and Energy. Currently, Yassine is the Research Fellow of the Regional Program Energy Security and Climate Change in the Middle East and North Africa, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS-REMENA). Dr. Zegzouti has coordinated and participated in several projects focusing on climate change and energy security in collaboration with the United Nations Program for the Environment (UNEP), the KAS-REMENA, and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
