The Center for Global Development hosted a paper presentation by Karim El Aynaoui, Executive President and Hinh T. Dinh, Senior Fellow at the Policy Center for the New South on “Economic Development Pathways in the New South: Country Experiences after the Washington Consensus”, on September 24, 2026, in Washington D.C., United States.
The presentation examined the transformation of the global economic order and its implications for emerging markets and developing economies. It highlighted the shift from the liberal international order and the Washington Consensus toward a more fragmented environment, marked by competing trade blocs, policy pragmatism, regionalization, and multipolar economic power.
The discussion addressed the constraints facing developing economies, including rising protectionism, limited macroeconomic space, debt vulnerabilities, and technological disruption. It also emphasized the need for pragmatic and context-specific development strategies, rather than standardized policy recipes.
Drawing on country experiences, the presentation discussed Morocco’s structural transformation, the evolving roles of manufacturing and services, and the opportunities available to “connector economies” in a fragmented global environment. It concluded by highlighting the importance of resilience, technology, regional integration, South-South cooperation, and joint research and development for future development pathways in the New South.
