Atlanticism

The Policy Center for the New South and the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) are jointly organizing a breakout session at the 2024 edition of the Brussels Forum. This side event will take place on April 19, 2024, and will focus on the topic “Atlanticism and the New South – Are We on the Same Page?”.

The wars in Ukraine and Gaza have spurred an active debate in the north and the south, about the conflicts themselves, but also about the future of the international system. Questions of prosperity, politics and security affect the Atlantic basin as a whole, including Latin America, Atlantic Africa and the Caribbean alongside North America and Europe. A wider Atlantic approach to transatlantic cooperation can embrace this north-south dimension.

But are north and south on the same page? Is this necessary in a world of more diffuse power and changing geopolitical and geo-economic dynamics? Where do we stand? What can be done – where and by whom?

This discussion seeks to bring to light the nuanced ways in which the New South shapes and is shaped by priorities and concerns around the Atlantic space.
