Mathias has served as international advisor to the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Presidency, special advisor for International Relations at São Paulo´s City Hall, and is currently the Director of Macroeconomics and International Relations of the Instituto de Pesquisa e Economia Aplicada (Ipea), the federal government's internal research centre. His academic research focuses on the politics of the mining sector in Angola and Mozambique, as well as Brazil-Africa since 2002.
