Technology and maritime security in the Atlantic: bridging the Gap
From
Roundtable
The purpose of this roundtable discussion is to address the conventional maritime security measures used on both the ships side and port side and explore the potential of information technology (IT) and operation technology (OT) systems and techniques to bridge the gaps in existing countermeasures.
Both prevention and crisis management are important in ensuring the safety and security of ports and vessels. Prevention management is proactive and aims to minimize the likelihood of incidents occurring, while crisis management is reactive and aims to mitigate the impact of incidents when they do occur. Together, they form a comprehensive approach to managing security risks and potential threats in the maritime industry.
A threat is the potential cause of an unwanted incident, which can result in harm.
Roundtable discussion topics
The topics for the roundtable discussion will center on the four facets of maritime security, namely the prevention and response aspects, as well as ships and ports:
1. To what extent are physical security prevention management processes and strategies put in place in seaports and on vessels sufficient to prevent incidents from occurring in the first place?
2. To what extent are conventional crisis management processes and strategies effective to respond to and recover from a security incident in ports and ships?
3. How much can new technologies aid in enhancing the resilience of ports and ships, with a particular emphasis on cybersecurity, both in terms of prevention and cure?
