Presentation of the Oxford Handbook of the Moroccan Economy: Key Insights on Morocco’s Economic Transformation
From

The Oxford Handbook of the Moroccan Economy offers a comprehensive and analytically grounded assessment of Morocco’s economic trajectory from 1960 to 2025. Bringing together 53 contributors across 34 chapters, this landmark publication examines the country's economic achievements, structural transformations, and persistent development challenges. Drawing on long-term trends, empirical evidence, and sectoral analysis, the Handbook provides a valuable reference for understanding the evolution of the Moroccan economy and the policy choices shaping its future.
Moving beyond traditional macroeconomic indicators and measures of social progress, the Handbook explores the underlying drivers of Morocco’s structural transformation, including productivity, economic diversification, employment quality, technological capabilities, and institutional development. It examines the role of industrial policy, innovation, private sector development, and integration into global value chains. While highlighting Morocco’s growing integration into the global economy and the emergence of industries such as automotive and aeronautics, the volume also critically assesses the limitations of this transformation, particularly regarding domestic economic spillovers, innovation capacity, private investment, and quality job creation.
Against this backdrop, the event will present and discuss selected findings from the Handbook, focusing on four interconnected dimensions of Morocco's economic transformation: overall economic performance, private sector development, climate change and the green transition, and labour market structures and dynamics.
By connecting historical trends with contemporary economic challenges, the session will provide an opportunity to present and discuss key insights from the Handbook, highlighting Morocco’s economic achievements, persistent structural challenges, and the policy priorities shaping the country’s path towards more competitive, resilient, and inclusive growth.
