The earthquake event with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, striking Al Haouz on September 8, 2023, has resulted in a profound tragedy for Morocco. Nearly 2,943 lives were lost, and 4,661 individuals were injured, with 1,139 identified as severe. The impact extends beyond human casualties to include substantial material damage, with 59,674 buildings collapsed, of which 32% were completely destroyed, and 68% partially damaged.

In this context, the Policy Center for the New South is organizing an event centered on a research paper presentation that provides an initial estimate of the earthquake's impact on both the macroeconomic and provincial levels, with a specific focus on the regions most affected by the earthquake. This event will also serve as an opportunity to discuss an initial assessment of the recovery plan, considering various scenarios related to the financing of the ambitious 5-year reconstruction plan proposed by the Moroccan authorities.
