The Policy Center for the New South will host the presentation of its Senior Fellow Otaviano Canuto on November 27 under the theme “Emerging Market and Developing Economies in the Global Economy”.

For 2020, global growth is projected to improve slightly to 3.4% rate, but this optimism looks flimsy. The upturn in 2020 is based on projected improvement in some stressed emerging market economies like Turkey, Iran and Argentina. Overall, while advanced economies are forecast to stay growing by 1.7%, emerging market and developing economies are expected to lift growth rates from 3.9% this year to 4.6% in 2020.

Furthermore, the global Financial System is facing key vulnerabilities such as rising corporate debt burdens, increasing holding of riskier & more illiquid assets by institutional investors. China’s corporate debt is an outstanding case. In order to improve living standards, governments may prioritize reforms supported by redistributive policies that spread the gains widely across the population—such as strengthening product market competition.

Against this background, the presentation will be addressing the main vulnerabilities faced by the Global Financial System while suggesting structural reforms necessary to reignite growth and prosperity.
