The Policy Center for the New South (PCNS) and the Group of External Advisors for the BWI at 80 Initiative will co-host a two-day consultation on February 6–7, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco, on the future roles of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), particularly in addressing the complex challenges facing Africa, the Middle East, and the broader global community.
This high-level dialogue is part of a global consultation process commemorating the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference (the “Bretton Woods Conference”). The initiative aims to develop a long-term vision for the world economy, foster international cooperation, and reimagine the evolution of these institutions to better respond to contemporary global challenges.
The consultation is guided by a distinguished group of external advisors, including Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance of Indonesia; Patrick Achi, former Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire; and Mark Malloch-Brown, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. Working closely with Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, and Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, the discussions will explore how multilateralism may evolve over the next 20–30 years and how these institutions can address global economic challenges, promote stability, and ensure sustainable development.
The Rabat consultation will convene prominent thinkers, policymakers, and practitioners from 19 countries, including 13 from Africa, to examine the evolving roles of the Bretton Woods Institutions within a rapidly changing global landscape shaped by economic, geopolitical, and technological transformations. The event will follow a participatory format, encouraging open dialogue and collaboration, with all participants actively contributing to the discussions around the table. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that diverse perspectives are heard and integrated into actionable insights.
The thematic sessions will focus on the unique opportunities and challenges faced by Africa and the Middle East, addressing key issues such as regional transformation, global economic integration, and sustainable development. These discussions aim to generate actionable insights into how the Bank and the Fund can adapt to a multipolar world and more effectively serve the needs of developing regions.
As a leading think tank in the Global South, the Policy Center for the New South (PCNS) brings its expertise and unwavering commitment to fostering inclusive development, sustainable growth, and equitable governance to this pivotal dialogue. Through its work, PCNS consistently amplifies the voices of Africa and the Global South in global policymaking.
The Rabat consultation provides a strategic opportunity to shape discussions on BWI reforms, ensuring that the priorities and perspectives of Africa and the Middle East are meaningfully represented in shaping the future of multilateralism and global economic governance.
