The course will have as its focus investment decision-making in the mining sector. It will begin with an introduction to the mining sector and its key economic characteristics. It will then look more closely at the organisations that make investment decisions in mining, the principles that guide those decisions and the processes that shape them. It will also look at how investments in the mining sector are financed, how government policies affect them and consider the development impacts of mining investments.

Objectives :

Practical understanding of :
• The functioning of the mining and mineral industries;
• The range of factors that need to be taken into account in making decisions on mineral investment;
• The tools available to help make those decisions.

David Humphreys
Independent mining sector
David Humphreys is an independent mining sector consultant based in the UK. David has written and lectured extensively on the economics of the mining and metals industries. He has been a visiting scholar at the Colorado School of Mines and at the Catholic University of Chile in Santiago, and Bosch Fellow at the Transatlantic Academy in Washington DC.
